Find the Hotel
Getting to La Vereda needs some planning and also requires the right type of vehicle. The most common way is through the town of Marcala, La Paz. From Marcala you head towards Santa Elena. The road is paved for a good distance but eventually becomes a dirt/gravel road (terracería) as it winds up into the mountains.[45 min - 1 hr] Santa Elena from Marcala depending on road conditions. Highly recommended that it be a pickup or an SUV with high clearance.
For international travelers, the journey is long. If arriving at Palmerola International Airport (XPL) in Comayagua, it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours by road to Marcala and then up to Santa Elena. Public transport(buses) operates all the way from Marcala to Santa Elena but they are slow most of the time crowded and operate on a very limited schedule. Taking a bus into town and hiring a local “flete” (private transport)to the hotel is an option for backpackers but driving your own vehicle offers maximum freedom to thoroughly explore the area.
